Unearthed in 1974 at the Jiaqu Houguan Site, this bamboo slip is a formal request for sick leave. It was filed by Dang, a minor frontier government official suffering from chest tightness, severe bloating, and a complete loss of appetite, leaving him too weak to work. Two days later, his superior, a Watchtower Commander named Kuang, forwarded the report to the Juyan Commandant's Office, formally requesting permission for Dang to leave his post and see a doctor.\nThis artifact offers a fascinating glimpse into the strict bureaucracy of the Hexi Frontier garrisons. Officers and soldiers had to follow a rigid chain of command to request time off for personal matters, illness, or mourning. Furthermore, Juyan Han bamboo slips reveal the harsh realities of frontier life, showing that the most common ailments among the guards were typhoid, severe chills, heatstroke, and dysentery.
