Astrology, the selection of auspicious dates, and other mystical arts were central to life in the Han Dynasty. The imperial bibliography in the Book of Han: Treatise on Literature lists a staggering 190 schools of thought and 2,582 scrolls dedicated to astronomy, the calendar, the Five Elements, and high divination. Yet, this massive collection only tells the story of the intellectual elite. Conspicuously missing from the imperial records is the Book of Days. Functioning much like a traditional farmer's almanac, the Book of Days was the everyday guide for the common people, a practical blend of lucky dates, daily superstitions, and folk magic. The Han Dynasty slips discovered in Gansu are full of these practical texts, giving us a rare, grounded look into the daily rituals and beliefs of ordinary citizens.\nThis specific bamboo slip is a surviving fragment from one of these Books of Days. It acts as an ancient calendar of taboos, listing the exact days of the year when it was strictly forbidden to shed blood or slaughter the "six domestic animals" (horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, dogs, and poultry).
