【Odes of the States · Odes of Wei】\n\nThe Odes of Qi Ao\n\nLook at that bend in the Qi River, where green bamboos grow lush and fair. There is a noble gentleman, refined as if carved and polished, like jade ground smooth. Solemn and dignified, resplendent and bright. This noble gentleman, forever unforgettable.\nLook at that bend in the Qi River, where green bamboos grow thick and green. There is a noble gentleman, with ear-plugs of precious jade, and a cap-buckle shining like stars. Solemn and dignified, resplendent and bright. This noble gentleman, forever unforgettable.\nLook at that bend in the Qi River, where green bamboos grow dense as a mat. There is a noble gentleman, precious as gold and tin, pure as a jade tablet or disc. Broad-minded and generous, leaning on his chariot's rails. Skilled in jest and banter, yet never cruel or harsh.\n\nThe Odes of Kao Pan\n\nMy hut is by the stream, the great man's heart is broad. Alone I sleep and wake and speak, my vow I'll never break.\nMy hut is on the hill, the great man's heart is free. Alone I sleep and wake and sing, my vow I'll never stray.\nMy hut is on the plain, the great man's heart is firm. Alone I sleep and wake and rest, my vow I'll never tell.\n\nThe Odes of the Great Lady\n\nTall and stately is the great lady, in broidered robes with plain over-garment. Daughter of the Marquis of Qi, wife of the Marquis of Wei. Sister of the Crown Prince, aunt to the Marquis of Xing, and sister-in-law to the Duke of Tan.\nHer hands are like soft blades of grass, her skin like congealed cream. Her neck is like the tree-grub, her teeth like melon seeds. A broad forehead and fine eyebrows. Her lovely smile dimples her cheeks, her beautiful eyes sparkle.\nStately and tall is the great lady, halting in the suburban fields. Four stallions prance proudly, red trappings fluttering, her pheasant-feathered carriage comes to court. The officers retire early, lest they weary their lord.\nThe river waters surge vast, flowing northward with a gurgle. Casting nets with a splash, sturgeon and carp leap, reeds and rushes stand tall. The many bridesmaids are splendid, the many escorts are stalwart.\nThe Odes of Mang\nA simple fellow, Mang, came with cloth to barter for silk. Not truly to barter for silk, but to seek me for marriage. I saw you across the Qi River, as far as Dunqiu. It was not I who delayed the date, you had no proper matchmaker. Pray do not be angry, let autumn be our time.\nI climbed that ruined wall, to gaze towards Fuguan. Not seeing Fuguan, my tears fell streaming. When I saw Fuguan, I laughed and talked. You consulted tortoise and yarrow stalks, no ill omens were found. You came with your carriage, to take me and my dowry away.\nWhen the mulberry leaves are fresh, lush and glossy. Ah, turtledove, do not eat the mulberries! Ah, young maiden, do not dally with men! A man who dallies can still break free. A maiden who dallies cannot be freed.\nWhen the mulberry leaves fall, yellow and dropping. Since I came to you, three years of hardship. The Qi River's waters swell, soaking the carriage curtains. I have not erred, but you have changed your ways. A man's heart is fickle, his virtue inconstant.\nFor three years as your wife, I toiled without rest. Rising early and sleeping late, never a morning of ease. My purpose once achieved, you turned to cruelty. My brothers do not know, they laugh at me. In silence I ponder, and grieve for myself.\nWe vowed to grow old together, but growing old brings me only bitterness. The Qi River has its banks, the marsh its bounds. In the innocence of childhood, we talked and laughed joyfully. Our vows were sincere, never thinking they'd be broken. Since they are broken, let it be so, and be done with it.\n...
