In ancient times, teachers often taught the young from books. Yet the delights of mountains, rivers, and local wonders cannot be fully captured on paper. When Li Daoyuan annotated the Water Classic, he journeyed the rivers himself; when Lu Hongjian composed the Classic of Tea, he tasted every spring beneath the heavens. What you see and hear yourself is worth a hundred pages; it has always been so.\nA friend has come from afar, and everything is strange to his eyes. The lakes and mountains sit at his door, yet may as well be on distant shores. It would be a shame to let such views grow old unseen. So I took up spare paper by lamplight and wrote this down.\nI record neither classic nor history, only what I have seen on the lake in a lifetime. Where words fail, I leave for him to see for himself, for the beauty of Jiangnan must be lived, not merely read.
