Students hold their scrolls, their reading voices ringing clear.\nThis is the place where the children of Hangzhou city begin their education, inside its orderly halls with the disciplining ruler hanging on the wall. Parents hope only that their children will not fall behind their peers, and might rise to lofty heights. One old master has taught in this hall for several decades. Whenever he passes the corridor, he hears the same sound of reading as before, yet the children no longer ask why, only what they scored. Nothing on their papers questions anything; they see only rankings and scores. And so he sighs: "The ruler was meant to correct one's bearing; now it only measures their rank."\nTeach a child rightly, and you set the foundation of a lifetime.
