Master Mai is a cat with a keen eye for work to be done. Visitors always think the hills and waters of West Lake seem carefree and easy, but the folk of Hangzhou carry more small worries in their hearts than there are pleasure boats upon the lake. As the saying goes, a bustling market keeps no idle hands, and Master Mai, too, learned this without any master to teach it. A kitten stuck up a tree and unable to climb down? It carries it down in its mouth. Dogs squabbling? It steps in with a stern meow. People bickering? It offers a paw to smooth things over. Thieves who steal cannot outrun it, and even those cruel enough to snap flowers off their stems earn themselves a couple of swats from its paw.\n\nCome nightfall, Master Mai still finds no rest, for cats all over the place are lined up waiting for it to groom their fur. Licking this one, then that one... tsk tsk tsk, its tongue's nearly worn to a cramp, but Master Mai never complains, only bows its head and works on, for its eyes see what needs doing, and its heart holds kindness.
