This duck earns its name from its strikingly vibrant cheeks, where interwoven patches of emerald, amber, ink-black, and frost-white resemble the painted masks of theatrical actors. Highly sociable, they flock together to forage for water caltrops, algae, and grains, though they are equally fond of feasting on river snails and various insects. In spring, they migrate to the northern frontiers to breed, and by autumn, they return to the rivers, lakes, and marshes of Jianghuai to overwinter. The muddy flats of the Yellow River serve as one of their most crucial sanctuaries.
