Everyone says Lazybones is a lazy cat through and through, doing nothing all day but eat and sleep. Even if you scoop it up off the ground by force, it'll keep right on purring in its sleep. But the cat-keeper knows better: Lazybones is, in truth, an especially brave little cat.\nLazybones was born with one toe fewer than the other kittens, and the tip of its tail was broken from birth too, clear signs that it came into the world a little lacking. But from the moment it first opened its eyes, it proved quite the eager eater, and soon enough had rounded itself out into such a plump little shape that everyone gradually forgot about it.\nThen came a night of pitch darkness and howling wind, when an unfamiliar scent crept into the cat-keeper's home. Lazybones, who loved to sleep out in the cool air of the courtyard, opened its golden eyes and waited silently in the dark as the danger drew near. And then: "Meowrrr!"\nIn the hush of the night, the kitten's snarling cry was especially bloodcurdling, startling awake every cat in the courtyard along with the cat-keeper.\nWhen the cat-keeper rushed out into the yard and saw the scattered, unfamiliar footprints upon the ground, she realized at once that an intruder had broken in. Her heart pounding, she counted the kittens in a panic, only to find that Lazybones was nowhere to be seen.\nFrantic with worry, the cat-keeper searched high and low, but even as the sun rose, she found no trace of Lazybones. Just as she was forced to return to the house, fearing the other kittens might face similar danger, she turned to find Lazybones had somehow appeared right behind her all along. The moment she entered the yard, Lazybones flopped down onto the ground, purring away, revealing a belly marked with a few fresh wounds.\nWiping her face, the cat-keeper finally scooped up Lazybones, whose comforting weight settled her racing heart: "Lazybones, Lazybones, you nearly scared me to death!"\nLazybones pushed away the cat-keeper's face as it drew ever closer with one paw, and let out an enormous yawn.
