Then there are those who leave the dead to their rest, preferring instead to swindle the living. They forge imitation relics, bury them in the damp earth to manufacture the rot of ages, carve them with false inscriptions, and peddle them in the marketplace to eager, gullible collectors. Fortunately, most of these charlatans are woefully unread, rendering their counterfeits utterly absurd. They will offer up a folding stool and swear it was the seat of the ancient Duke of Zhou, or hawk a paper fan claiming it was held by Confucius himself. Some even forge imperial seals of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, foolishly carving the words "Seal of Emperor Wu," oblivious to the fact that "Wu" was a posthumous title bestowed only after his death. It does not take a master antiquarian to unravel such clumsy lies. A village child reciting his first primers could see right through them.
