Uncovered in 1973 at the Golden Pass Ruins, this bamboo slip contains a personal letter from a man named Yin Heng to his friend Weiqing. The text is filled with heartfelt well-wishes, featuring everyday greetings typical of the Han era. Yin Heng asks after his friend's "daily comfort" (literally, how he is adapting to the "dryness and dampness" of the weather), urges him to "eat heartily and take good care of yourself," and reminds him to "be mindful of the spring air." One poignant line captures the essence of the text: "Honestly, there is nothing else to speak of here on the frontier." This brief admission reveals how writing to a friend was his only solace, a fleeting escape from the crushing monotony of garrison life and a quiet expression of homesickness.
