【The Fourteenth Book of Ceremonies: The Mourning Rites for an Officer】\n\nThe mourning rites for an officer. A single pig is offered as food, and it is boiled on the side outside the right of the temple gate, facing east. The fish and dried meat cauldrons follow in order, arranged from the north. The rice-cooking stove is against the east wall, facing west. A basin is set southwest of the western steps, with water west of the basin and a basket east of it. The wine vessels are placed in the chamber beneath the north wall, opposite the door, with two jars of sweet wine and wine, the wine on the east. No stand is used, and the cover is made of fine linen cloth, with a ladle placed on top, its handle pointing south. A plain table and a reed mat are set beneath the western eaves. Chopped thatch grass, five inches long, is bundled and placed in a basket, set on the western stand. Two dishes of pickled vegetables and meat sauce are arranged east of the western pillar, with the meat sauce on the west, and a single tripod vessel following. Two additional dishes for accompanying offerings follow, and four baskets of dried fruits follow, arranged from the north. Two round vessels of millet and glutinous millet are set between the steps, with the western one higher, placed on a reed mat. A ewer with water is placed in a basin, with its spout facing south, south of the western steps, and a basket with a towel is east of it. Three tripods are set outside the right of the gate, facing north, arranged from the north, with their crossbars and covers set in place. The ladles and cutting boards are placed west of the western study. The roasted meat offering board is set on the inner western study, aligned southward.\nThe host and his brothers wear mourning clothes as at the burial, while the guests and attendants wear mourning garments as at condolence visits, and all take their positions outside the gate, as at the morning and evening mourning stations. The women and the host's female relatives, in mourning attire, take their positions in the hall, likewise. The invocator, with a hempen band and girdle, spreads a mat in the chamber, facing east, with the table on the right, then descends, goes out, and with the clan officer takes a position west of the gate, facing east, with the northernmost as the highest. The clan officer announces that the attendants are ready, and then requests to welcome the guests. As at a condolence visit, upon entering the gate, there is weeping, and the women weep. The host takes his position in the hall, while the other principals, brothers, and guests take positions in the western area, as at the return weeping station. The invocator enters the gate, goes to the left, and faces north. The clan officer stands before the western steps, facing north.\nThe invocator washes his hands, ascends, takes the thatch bundle, descends, washes it, ascends again, enters, and places it on the mat east of the table, aligned eastward, then descends, washes a goblet, ascends, and the weeping ceases. The host leans on his staff and enters. The invocator follows, standing on the left, facing west. The assistant presents the pickled vegetables and meat sauce, with the meat sauce on the north. The food server and attendants wash their hands, go out, and lift the cauldrons, with the eldest on the left. The tripods are brought in and set before the western steps, facing east, arranged from the north. The ladles and cutting boards follow and are set in place. The person on the left removes the crossbars, covers, and ladles, while the food server and the person on the right load the offerings. When finished, the ladle bearers withdraw in reverse order and return to their positions. The cutting boards are brought in and set east of the dishes, with the fish following, and the dried meat placed separately. The assistant sets two round vessels south of the cutting boards, with millet, and glutinous millet to its east. A single tripod vessel is set south of the dishes. The food server goes out and stands west of the door. The attendants remove the tripods. The invocator pours sweet wine and instructs the food server to open the covers. The food server agrees, opens the covers, and places them back south of the round vessels, then returns to his position. The invocator places the goblet south of the tripod vessel and returns to his position. The host bows twice, touching his head to the ground. The invocator offers the blessing and instructs the food server to make the offering. The food server agrees, rolls up his sleeves, takes millet and glutinous millet, and offers them on the thatch three times, then takes the skin and offers it, doing as before. The invocator takes the placed goblet, makes an offering, and does likewise; if not exhausted, he adds more and returns it to its place. The host bows twice, touching his head to the ground. When the invocator finishes the prayer, the host bows as before, weeps, and goes out to return to his position.\nThe invocator welcomes the impersonator, and one person in mourning attire, holding a basket, weeps and follows the impersonator. When the impersonator enters the gate, the men leap, and the women leap. The impersonator washes his hands, and the clan officer hands him a towel. When the impersonator reaches the steps, the invocator leads him up. When the impersonator ascends, the clan officer announces the leaping as before. When the impersonator enters the door, there is leaping as before, and the weeping ceases. The women enter the chamber. The host and the invocator bow to settle the impersonator. The impersonator bows and then sits.\n……
