Ricecake is a little spotted dog with a taste for pastry and a knack for telling smells apart. Sweet means cakes and fruit. Sneezes mean the spices brought by the curly-haired men. Steam means a hot meal and warm hands. Ricecake is wandering the streets when he passes a spice shop and can't stop sneezing. Strangely, some boxes leave him unmoved, while others set him off. The foreign merchants see this and crowd close, holding their wares under his nose one after another, each eager to prove his own goods are the finest. Ricecake turns his head away and ignores them, until one merchant runs off to buy a packet of Fuling cakes; only then does he look up. Scents come in like a sea, and Ricecake loves them. They make him feel he isn't a stray at all, just a dog with the whole world for home.
