【The Fifteenth Ceremony of the Special Sacrifice】\n\nThe rite of the special sacrifice. The day is not consulted. When the day is divined, the host, wearing a dark ceremonial cap and robes, takes his position outside the gate, facing west. The sons and grandsons, dressed like the host, stand to the south of the host, facing west, with the north as the place of honor. The officers and various attendants, dressed like the brothers, stand facing east, with the north as the place of honor. Mats are spread in the middle of the gate, outside the threshold to the west of the central pillar. The diviner takes the divining stalks from the western study, holds them, and facing east, receives the command from the host. The steward, standing to the left of the host, assists in proclaiming the command, saying: "The filial grandson, so-and-so, divines for a coming day, so-and-so, for this particular matter, to offer to his august ancestor, so-and-so. May he deign to enjoy this offering!" The diviner assents, turns around, and takes his seat on the mat, facing west. The hexagram recorder sits to his left. When the divination is complete, the hexagram is written down. The diviner holds it up to show the host. The host receives it, examines it, and returns it. The diviner turns around, facing east. The elders interpret the divination. When finished, they report to the host: "The divination says auspicious." If it is inauspicious, then they divine for a later day, following the same procedure. The ancestral officer announces that the matter is concluded.\nOn the morning of the third day before the ceremony, the person to serve as the impersonator of the deceased is divined, following the same procedure as for choosing the day. The command for divination says: "The filial grandson, so-and-so, for this particular matter, to offer to his august ancestor, so-and-so, divines whether so-and-so, son of so-and-so, shall serve as the impersonator. May he deign to enjoy this offering!"\nThen the impersonator is invited. The host stands outside the gate of the impersonator's residence. The sons and grandsons stand behind the host, facing north, with the east as the place of honor. The impersonator, dressed like the host, comes out from the left side of the gate, facing west. The host steps aside, and all face east, with the north as the place of honor. The host bows twice. The impersonator returns the bow. The ancestral officer announces the invitation as before, concluding: "We have divined that you shall serve as the impersonator for so-and-so, and the divination says auspicious. We presume to invite you!" The invocator assents and conveys the message. The impersonator assents. The host bows twice, touching his head to the ground. The impersonator enters, and the host withdraws.\nThe guests are invited. The guest, dressed like the host, comes out from the left side of the gate, facing west, and bows twice. The host, facing east, returns the bow twice. The ancestral officer announces, saying: "So-and-so will present the annual sacrifice, and I presume you will honor it with your presence. I presume to invite you!" The guest says: "How dare I not respectfully follow!" The host bows twice, and the guest returns the bow. The host withdraws, and the guest bows to see him off.\nOn the evening of the following day, the cauldrons are set up outside the gate, facing north, with the north as the place of honor, covered with lids. The stand is placed to their south, aligned north-south, with game placed upon it, head facing east. The sacrificial animal is to its west, head facing north, feet facing east. The washing basin is set up to the southeast of the steps for descending, and the jars and stands are placed at the eastern wall. The dishes, baskets, and tripods are placed in the eastern chamber, with the south as the place of honor. The low tables, mats, and two round baskets are placed in the western hall. The host, sons, and grandsons take their positions east of the gate, as before. The guest and the other guests take their positions west of the gate, facing east, with the north as the place of honor. The ancestral officer and the invocator stand to the northwest of the guests, facing east, with the south as the place of honor. The host bows twice, and the guest returns the bow twice. He bows three times to the other guests, and they return the bow twice. The host bows and enters, the brothers follow, and the guest and other guests follow, taking their positions below the hall, as in the outer arrangement. The ancestral officer ascends by the western steps, inspects the jars and washing vessels and the dishes and baskets, then descends, and facing northeast, announces that they are clean and complete. The guest goes out, the host goes out, and all return to their outer positions. The ancestral officer inspects the sacrificial animal and announces that it is fat and complete. The officer in charge of the kitchen prepares the pig. The ancestral officer lifts the tail of the game and announces that it is ready; he lifts the cauldron lids. He requests the time, saying: "When the broth is cooked." He announces that the matter is concluded. The guest goes out, and the host bows to see him off.\n……
