Far water, long hills, and a pair of herons; idle body, weary heart, like an egret alone.\nKnown in the Song dynasty as the jade heron, it resembles a great duck, with a long neck held high and eyes as red as cinnabar. It beats its wings amid thunderous waves, and roosts beside the reeds and cattails. Once a rare bird of the emperor's own gardens, by the Tang and Song dynasties, the jade heron had flown into the water-towns of Jiangnan. As it often calls in the night, seeming to carry a solitary, lofty air, people of the time took it for a wandering recluse of the jianghu.
