Known today as face threading, facial grooming is an ancient Chinese grooming art. The practice dates all the way back to the Spring and Autumn period. By the Han and Tang dynasties, specialized artisans were using fine silk threads to expertly pluck and contour facial hair. During the Song dynasty, street-side barbers became a staple of city life. By the Ming and Qing eras, wandering groomers were a common sight, carrying their tools on shoulder poles and walking from neighborhood to neighborhood offering a clean shave. Remarkably, this ancient craft is still practiced in parts of China today.
