"A coat of ebon black, adorned with gold and jade; twin stars shining upon his brow." Black Gold is a handsome dog, and one of the finest built you'll find. Each day he makes brisk rounds through the great house folks call the Capital Relay, and comes away with no small share of pets and praise. Petting—this much Black Gold knows—means the people are fond of him. But the babble of words, Black Gold doesn't understand. What are they all saying? Whenever the people in bright colors and shining gold crouch down to greet him, Black Gold wags his tail, sits down, tilts his head, and listens intently, but he understands not a word. A dog's nose is keen, and Black Gold can smell the different scents on everyone in that big house. Some carry the heavy perfume of spices, some the salty dampness of the sea, some the cold of the north wind... Black Gold, too, carries his own scent. The smell of moss along the bluestone path, firewood smoke from the kitchen at dusk, mud clinging to his paws after the rain—the smell of home. Black Gold goes home every day, so his scent always stays strong. But for the people in that big house, the smell of home on them grows fainter, and fainter still. Black Gold tilts his head and looks at them. Would these people, he wonders, lose their way home?
