Many noble houses of Hangzhou brewed their own wine. Chen Zixi was fond of drinking, and his elder brother Chen Zizhen, borrowing the name of the Spring's Return Hall, arranged for a batch of medicinal wine to be brewed.\nSteeped with over a dozen warming, nourishing herbs, prolonged drinking was said to strengthen the sinews and bones, fortify the root and nurture the origin. The taste, too, was superb, smooth and mellow upon entry, the complex herbal notes carefully wrapped within the wine's aroma. At first taste, it was strange yet fresh, leaving a lingering sweetness in the throat after swallowing.\nOn the first opening of the jar, Chen Zixi drank it to the very bottom in one go, only then remembering that the wine was meant to nourish the body.
