【Jinxin Chapter, Part Two】\n\nMencius said, "How unkind was King Hui of Liang! A kind man extends his love from those he loves to those he does not love. An unkind man extends his disregard from those he does not love to those he loves." Gongsun Chou asked, "What do you mean?"\n"King Hui of Liang, for the sake of land, caused his people to be ground to pieces and fought a war, suffering a great defeat. When he was about to renew the fight, fearing he could not win, he drove his beloved sons and younger brothers to die for it. This is what is meant by extending his disregard from those he does not love to those he loves."\nMencius said, "In the Spring and Autumn period, there were no righteous wars. Some were better than others, that is all. A punitive expedition is when the superior attacks the inferior. Enemy states do not launch punitive expeditions against each other."\nMencius said, "It is better to have no books than to believe everything in books. In the case of the 'Wucheng' chapter, I take only two or three strips of bamboo. A benevolent man is invincible in the world. When the most benevolent attacks the most unbenevolent, how could the blood have flowed so as to float pestles?"\nMencius said, "There are men who say, 'I am skilled at deploying troops; I am skilled at warfare.' This is a great crime. If a ruler loves benevolence, he will be invincible in the world. When he marched south, the northern barbarians complained; when he marched east, the western barbarians complained, saying, 'Why does he put us last?' When King Wu attacked Yin, he had three hundred war chariots and three thousand fierce warriors. The king said, 'Do not fear. I bring you peace, not war against the people.' They bowed their heads till their horns touched the ground, and kowtowed. The word 'expedition' means 'to correct.' Each desires to correct himself. What need is there for war?"\nMencius said, "A carpenter or wheelwright can give others the compass and square, but he cannot make them skillful."\nMencius said, "When Shun ate parched grain and wild herbs, it was as if he would do so for life. When he became emperor, wearing embroidered robes, playing the lute, with the two princesses serving him, it was as if it had always been so."\nMencius said, "Only now do I understand the gravity of killing a man's kin. If you kill a man's father, he will kill your father; if you kill a man's elder brother, he will kill your elder brother. So it is not that you kill yourself, but it is as close as a hair's breadth."\nMencius said, "In ancient times, passes were established to guard against violence; nowadays, passes are established to perpetrate violence."\nMencius said, "If a man does not practice the Way himself, it will not be practiced by his wife and children. If he employs others not according to the Way, he cannot employ his wife and children."\nMencius said, "He who is thorough in profit will not be destroyed in a bad year. He who is thorough in virtue will not be disordered in an evil age."\nMencius said, "A man who loves fame can yield a state of a thousand chariots. If he is not such a man, the look on his face will betray him over a single basket of rice or a bowl of soup."\nMencius said, "If the benevolent and worthy are not trusted, the state will be empty. Without ritual and righteousness, superiors and inferiors will be in disorder. Without government affairs, resources will be insufficient."\nMencius said, "There are cases where an unkind man gains a state. But there has never been a case where an unkind man gains the world."\nMencius said, "The people are the most important; the altars of the grain and soil come next; the ruler is the least important. Therefore, gaining the common people, one becomes emperor; gaining the emperor's favor, one becomes a feudal lord; gaining a feudal lord's favor, one becomes a high official. If a feudal lord endangers the altars of the grain and soil, he is replaced. When the sacrificial animals have been prepared, the grain offerings have been purified, and the sacrifices are offered at the proper times, yet there is drought or flood, then the altars of the grain and soil are replaced."\nMencius said, "Sages are teachers for a hundred generations. Such were Boyi and Liuxia Hui. Therefore, those who hear of the ways of Boyi become incorruptible though they were greedy, and resolute though they were cowardly. Those who hear of the ways of Liuxia Hui become generous though they were mean, and broad-minded though they were narrow. They rose up a hundred generations ago, and a hundred generations later, those who hear of them are all stirred to action. Could anyone but a sage have such an effect? How much more so those who personally received their instruction?"\nMencius said, "Benevolence is the distinguishing characteristic of man. When embodied in man's conduct, it is called the Way."\n...
