【The Positions in the Bright Hall, Part XIV】\n\nIn ancient times, when the Duke of Zhou received the feudal lords at the Bright Hall, the Son of Heaven stood with his back to the axe-embroidered screen, facing south. The Three Dukes stood before the central steps, facing north, with the highest on the east. The feudal lords took their positions east of the eastern steps, facing west, with the highest on the north. The lords of the states stood west of the western steps, facing east, with the highest on the north. The sons of the lords stood east of the gate, facing north, with the highest on the east. The lords of the minor states stood west of the gate, facing north, with the highest on the east. The nine Yi tribes stood outside the East Gate, facing west, with the highest on the north. The eight Man tribes stood outside the South Gate, facing north, with the highest on the east. The six Rong tribes stood outside the West Gate, facing east, with the highest on the south. The five Di tribes stood outside the North Gate, facing south, with the highest on the east. The nine Cai tribes stood outside the Ying Gate, facing north, with the highest on the east. The four frontier regions reported their arrivals at each generation. Such were the positions of the Duke of Zhou at the Bright Hall.\nThe Bright Hall was meant to distinguish the noble and humble ranks of the feudal lords. In former times, King Zhou of Yin threw the realm into chaos, making dried meat of the Marquis of Gui to feast the lords. Thus, the Duke of Zhou assisted King Wu in overthrowing Zhou. When King Wu passed away and King Cheng was young and weak, the Duke of Zhou ascended to the position of the Son of Heaven to govern the realm. After six years, he received the lords at the Bright Hall, established rites and music, issued standards of measures, and the whole realm was greatly subdued. In the seventh year, he returned the government to King Cheng. King Cheng, recognizing the Duke of Zhou's great merit and labor for the realm, enfeoffed him at Qufu, with a territory of seven hundred li square, a thousand war chariots, and commanded that the Duke of Lu should forever sacrifice to the Duke of Zhou with the rites and music of the Son of Heaven. Therefore, in the first month of spring, the ruler of Lu rode in the grand carriage, bearing the bow case, with a banner of twelve streamers adorned with the sun and moon, and sacrificed to God in the suburb, with Hou Ji as his companion—rites of the Son of Heaven.\nIn the sixth month of summer, they performed the Di sacrifice to the Duke of Zhou in the Grand Temple, using a white bull as the victim, vessels of the Xiong, Xiang, and Shan Lei types, and a yellow jar for the fragrant wine. For the libation, they used a jade gui with a great jade tablet; for offerings, jade dishes and carved baskets; for the goblets, jade cups with further carving, supplemented by jade bi and jade jue; for the stands, the Kun and Jue types. They sang the Qing Miao in the hall, and below played the Xiang with pipes. With shields of red lacquer and axes of jade, wearing crowns, they performed the Da Wu dance. With skin caps and plain white skirts, baring their arms, they performed the Da Xia dance. Mei was the music of the Eastern Yi; Ren was the music of the Southern Man. Bringing the music of the Yi and Man into the Grand Temple signified the extension of Lu's glory throughout the realm.\n……
