Incense brushes the crown; the jeweled pagoda enters the clouds. Mortals offer prayers meant for divine ears alone.\nThe Sleeping Daoist lightly taps his fly-whisk against the little donkey's forehead. The dazed donkey comes to itself and stumbles. A child nearby sees the whisk, tugs at his mother's sleeve in wonder, and says, "Mama, look, an immortal!" Then, looking at the donkey, he asks softly, "Immortal, can I pet your donkey?" His devout mother lowers her eyes, covers his mouth at once, and hurries aside to make way... Their whispers vanish into the scented haze, leaving only a few brays. The Daoist pauses, then smiles and strokes the donkey's head. Did the little donkey hear all the grown-ups' prayers and children's wishes?
